What is Coaching

Here’s my definition of coaching:

"Coaching is an on-going partnership that helps you achieve powerful results in your personal and professional life. The coaching process involves heightening your self awareness, challenging your beliefs and creating a space for you to heal and transform your life. By concentrating on where you are now and why you think and behave the way you do, coaching empowers you to move forward with acceleration to get where you want to be.”

But why don’t people do anything about it?

Many people know what to do in life to become more happy & successful but they don’t do what they know.

It is a Life Coach’s job to help you get what you want in life by breaking down the barriers that you may be imposing on yourself.

The best analogy I can use is that of a Personal Fitness Trainer.

When you go to a gym they will first ask you what your goals are:

  1. Lose weight?
  2. Lose fat?
  3. Build muscle?
  4. Increase stamina? etc

They will then see where you are at with regards to your goal.

So for example, if you want to lose body fat, they may ask you to take a body fat composition test that will measure your current levels of body fat. You may be asked to take a fitness test; asked what your current eating habits are etc.

After establishing exactly how much you want to lose and over what period of time you want to lose it, the trainer will then devise a plan of action of what you must do in order to achieve your fat reduction goals.

Along the way your personal fitness trainer will:

  1. encourage and motivate you;
  2. ask you questions about your motivation;
  3. identify any barriers that you face; and
  4. help you move forward.

The end goal of a trainer is to help you achieve your goals a lot quicker and more effectively than if you did it yourself.

A Life Coach does exactly the same as a Personal Trainer but with areas of your life.

This could include:

  1. Heightened Awareness
  2. Purpose & Direction
  3. Career Planning
  4. Financial Abundance
  5. Fulfilling Relationships
  6. Constant Motivation
  7. Unlimited Confidence
  8. Personal Growth
  9. Personal Effectiveness
  10. Powerful Leadership etc

What is the role of a Life Coach?

Rather than actually telling you the answers, I will be the catalyst for getting you to find the answers yourself by asking powerful questions.

By asking challenging and thought provoking questions, we can unlock your potential.

We can become so caught up in the busy-ness of our lives that we can’t see the wood for the trees!

Well, coaching enables you to see different alternatives and to take a step back and reflect on your own life objectively. This in turn leads to greater:

  1. Self-awareness;
  2. Focus; &
  3. Accountability

A Coach is...

  1. Your own personal trainer to enable you to achieve your goals
  2. Your champion during a turnaround.
  3. Your trainer in communication and life skills.
  4. Your sounding board when making choices.
  5. Your motivation when strong actions are called for.
  6. Your unconditional support when things are not working out.
  7. Your mentor in personal development.
  8. Your co-designer when creating an extraordinary project.
  9. Your confidence when you are down.
  10. Your wake-up call if you don't hear your own.

And most importantly, your partner in helping you discover your passion and getting you to where you want to be!

How does coaching work?

You now know what coaching actually is, so how does it work?

Well, coaching can be conducted through two different mediums:

  1. one-on-one sessions in person; &/or
  2. one-on-one sessions on the telephone

No matter what method you choose, the approach is the same.

During each coaching session we will discuss and explore your journey, including your:

  1. goals;
  2. achievements;
  3. challenges and opportunities for growth; as well as
  4. develop a plan of action for the week / fortnight.

Action plans are not like homework that you were assigned in school.

It consists of steps to move you closer toward your goals and dreams.

You bring the agenda and I bring you the coaching skills to create a partnership that moves you consistently forward.

Because coaching is a transformational process, most of my clients opt to take up blocks of 10 sessions at a time so that they have time to see the personal changes take place in their lives.

However, we will design a coaching arrangement that meets your individual needs and schedule. The basic design consists of:

  1. A first session to determine how comfortable we feel with each other, to assess what you want and an outline of how we will get there.
  2. An initial assessment to evaluate work and life needs and establish goals.
  3. Regular on-going coaching sessions of 90 minutes thereafter of weekly or fortnightly duration to ensure momentum is maintained*
  4. Exercises to increase self-awareness, encourage creative thinking, and develop practical skills.
  5. Quartlery evaluation and review, along with strategies for ongoing support.

*Together, we will define the length and frequency that best supports you. Sessions may be focused on one specific goal or challenge(s) that you are currently facing or on a much broader set of personal or professional issues.
